Meadowhall on lockdown: Hundreds stranded as Sheffield shopping centre hit by major floods – News 2

 The force’s operational support unit said on Twitter: “All roads around Meadowhall are currently gridlocked “There is heavy flooding due to adverse weather conditions and closures are in place Please avoid the area. Events at Meadowhall are CANCELLED. We advise only essential travel ” The unit then added: “If you are in Meadowhall, do not leave the shopping centre – await further updates  “If you are travelling to collect people, do not attempt your journey. “Await updates as we work to ensure safety of people in the immediate vicinity ” The force said it had closed the nearby junction 34 of the M1 in both directions to “alleviate pressure”  The shopping centre itself also took to Twitter. Their post read: “Christmas Live Cancelled: Due to the adverse weather and the subsequent impact on the public transport it is with regret that the Christmas Live event has been cancelled  “If you were planning to attend we will be in touch with regards our ticket refund policy as soon as possible ” READ NOW:UK flood warning: Evacuations in place after mudslides strike[INSIGHT] Shoppers were quick to comment on the post  One said: “You knew this was going to be the outcome, the river was way too high and it should’ve been cancelled before people travelled ” Another added: “Whoever left it this late, risking people’s lives for profit, shouldn’t be doing this job ”   A third added: “That’s really bad Meadowhall to let people travel knowing full well that event wasn’t going to be safe ” Another said: “Should never have been left this late to cancel, lots of people travelling already!” Flooding surrounding the shopping centre has also brought gridlock to the area   Bus service First South Yorks said the Meadowhall Interchange has been flooded causing travel chaos for those able to get to safety from the flooding  The service tweeted: “Meadowhall Interchange has been closed due to weather and risk of flooding “Service X1 is running the same as our previous update just missing Meadowhall interchange ”     In a full statement Meadowhall said: “Due to the adverse weather and the subsequent impact this has had on the regional public transport infrastructure, it is with regret that the decision has been made to cancel this evening’s Meadowhall Christmas Live concert  “We appreciate this news will be very disappointing to the many ticket holders who remained keen to attend despite the rain, but we feel we have a duty to recognise the issues people may face in trying to return home  “The safety of our visitors, retailers and staff is of paramount importance to us and as a precaution our flood defences have been deployed and we are giving retailers the option to close early should they wish to do so For further updates please monitor our website and social channels.
